Journey to excellence of Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital blood centre

Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital Blood Centre caters to both Wadia hospitals. They provide services for blood and its components for cardiac surgery, neonatal intensive care unit, IPCU, bone marrow transplant, Haematology, oncology, Pediatric Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology patients, Intrauterine Transfusion and Exchange Transfusion. Additionally, blood is given to 150 Thalassemia patients every month as per their requirement.

The blood is collected mainly in outdoor voluntary blood donation camp in and around Mumbai including places as far as Karjat, Palghar, Virar, and Panvel. Annual collection is around 5000 Blood units. Total collection of Blood and Blood Products in the year 2021 (January to December).

Blood Centre has an active training program for the staff. Regular lectures are also conducted for Resident Doctors and Nursing Staff. Stringent quality standards are maintained as per the licensing Authority and it undergoes yearly joint FDA and CDSCO Inspection. There is an active Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee which meets quarterly. All adverse transfusion reactions are duly recorded and reported to National Hemovigilance Program of India. EQAS program participation is as per NACO guidelines.

  9. Single Donor Platelets by Apheresis (SDP)

  10. Leucodepleted Red cells.

Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital Blood Center acquired the license in April 23, 1991 for Whole Blood, FFP and Packed Cells. Till 2017, Our Blood Centre was performing all the tests manually and the pediatric Aliquots were done by Open System. Our Journey towards Excellence began in the later part of 2016 when Sterile Connecting Device was acquired, by which aliquots were started in closed system which had shelf life till expiry of Blood Bag. In May 2018, Blood Centre applied and got the License for Platelet, Cryoprecipitate, Single Donor plasma and Cryo poor Plasma.

Blood Centre acquired State of art fully automated Immunohematology Analyser for Blood Grouping and Cross matching in October 2018.Vitros ECi was acquired at the same time for TTI Serology by Chemiluminescence.

Thereby increasing the Accuracy of testing and reducing the Turnaround time.

Blood Centre was remodeled and new plan was submitted for apheresis and approved by CDSCO. The Blood Centre was renovated as per new approved plan. The Blood Centre applied for license for SDP and Leucodepletion, and got approval.

In order to further improve the transfusion services and attain excellence Blood center initiated the preparation for NABH Accreditation of Blood Centre for which the Quality Manual was prepared and the Quality Management System of the Blood Centre was streamlined. All procedures and policies were updated and intensive training of the staff was done. The entire staff of the Blood Centre worked relentlessly to attain the standards of the NABH. During the process we were mentored by the Quality and Accreditation Coordinator Dr. Dhruv Mamtora, The NABH inspection was successfully conducted on 12th and 13th April 2022.

Having attained the NABH standards for excellence, our Blood Centre team aims to strive hard to maintain and further improve the transfusion services.
